Khacc 1966

For many years well known angling personality Ern Melleuish had conducted  angling classes at the Hornsby Evening College. In 1966 personal commitments made it impossible  for Ern to continue with the classes, those attending at the time thought the evenings were too valuable to be allowed to go out of existence. After being al- lowed the use of the college room some of the men decided to form a  fishing club. A number of meetings were held and a provisional committee was formed. After considerable organisation and publicity the first public meeting of the new Ku-ring-gai Hornsby Angling and Casting Club was held at Willow Park Hall, Edge- worth David Ave, Hornsby on Wednesday 20th April 1966.

  

The first meeting was well attended with more than 200 people attending, the first evening’s guest speaker was popular  angler “Tiger” Carnemolia.   

 

 

Membership was 237 and Ern Melleuish  accepted the position as Patron.   

After only 8 months the club was the largest non-game fishing club in Australia and the only fishing club in Australia  with women members endorsed by the Australian Fishing Clubs  Association.  

At the time of the first anniversary, 21st April 1967 the club had 320 members, from 63 sub- urbs of Sydney metro and country areas, one even from as far away as New Guinea.  

Founded on a policy of weekly meetings and regular fishing and casting outings, a well-established club is now in existence.   

40 years later the club still meets every Wednesday night at the same venue and at the same time.      

A competition was organised for a club logo and from the 70 entries received club member Eric Hayes’ design was the winner and the club colors of blue and white were decided upon.      

Over the years there have been some changes, but many of the things have  remained the same. The weekly meetings are still conducted in the same way —   An address from the president covering previous outings, weigh-in details and  upcoming details, a short break then usually followed by a guest speaker— throughout the year a great many subjects are covered.
